Tühjusest (On Emptiness)
6 April-7 May 2026

Galerii Metropol 6 m2 & Metropol Kapp, Vana-Kalamaja 46, Tallinn

The exhibition “Tühjusest” explores emptiness as a space, a process and a philosophy. The artworks express a will to leave space for what is not, and honour what we don’t know. There are paintings, sculptures installations and animations on show.

The exhibition is part of an exhibition exchange between Galleria Huuto in Helsinki and Galerii Metropol 6 m2 & Metropol Kapp in Tallinn, Estonia. They are both artist communities with both exhibition activity and artits’ studios. The co-operation is part of the international program of Metropol’s 20 years jubilee and will be continued in May, when Metropol puts up a show in Huuto.

The artists:
Mirka Hämäläinen, Laura Konttinen, Kaarina Ormio, Henrik Pathirane, Timo Tähkänen and Enni Vekkeli

Something has left in Mirka Hämäläinen´s paintings. The emptiness in the paintings and drawings is an infinite space that let´s us collect one´s feelings and thoughts.

In Laura Konttinen´s video work existence passes us – and we are already gone. And at the Height of the Third Day is an experimental stop motion animation about the transformation of an old photograph in a post-memory afterlife.

In Kaarina Ormio´s paintings we peak a big and unknown space from a small hole.

Memory lives and things are forgotten in Henrik Pathirane´s composition in the gallery´s filing cabinet.

Timo Tähkänen´s Forgotten Saints remind us of what could have been. They are a part of
Timo´s ongoing queer artistic research project.

Enni Vekkeli´s clay sculptures have been burned with varying methods, some in ceramic kiln, some under a campfire. In water, some of them dissolve, wire around them rusts.

Galerii Metropol 6 m2 & Metropol Kapp
is located in the tsarist stone house of Kalamaja district in Tallinn. It is an initiative and art center of the artists community based in same building. Exhibitions and events have taken place continuously since 2009.

The gallery is not dependent of institutional or legal frameworks and operates with the input of artists (Kaarel Kütas, Taave Tuutma, Triinu Jürves, Meeland Sepp etc.). From the summer of 2021 Gallery Metropol has 4 exhibition spacesa – gallery Metropol 6 m2, exhibition space in the filing cabinet calledwalls Metropol Cabinet, small allocated room Metropol Shop and differenciated walls named Metropol Staircase.

Exhibitions take place regularly, changing on average once a month. The democracy and flexibility of the program lies in hosting both recognized and unknown and amateur artists and everyone is treated equally. During the last few years, gallery’s statistics are part of the official statistics of Estonian exhibition institutions.

Along with the exhibitions, Metropol also hosts private concerts and performances, awards its own art prize (Füürer Praiss) and organizes the annual “Performing Arts Festival of March 9”.
